My son had a walk up over the top of Piethorne Reservoir, Newhey with his girlfriend and his camera and took a number of interesting photographs. One of these reminded me of the last time I saw the subject, it’s an old run down wall of what could have been a farm house, or could even have been just a massive wall. Sat on that very wall the last time I saw it was a Wheatear, which is a small summer visiting bird from Africa.

It has been observed that rogue deer have been seen in and around Tandle Hill. This painting shows a typical scene of such an event.

Approximately 4 miles from where Robert lives is the picturesque Saddleworth village of Delph. Rising up from the main street is a country lane called Stoneswood Road with a number of private houses and farms are along there. Recently Robert was travelling along this lane on a very cold day and saw this lonely but seemingly content horse - it suggested to Robert that the horse was typical of ‘we shall put up with the weather no matter what’ attitude of the Saddleworth folk and decided to try to capture that in a painting.

The painting is of the Square in Dobcross with two old boys chewing the fat. This was the location of a lot of the scenes in a feature film called The Yanks. The Pub in the painting was featured as a Post Office in the film.

High Stile Lane is a road between Saddleworth Church and Diggle. This view of the valley, including horses in a paddock, was on a beautiful autumn afternoon.

Chew Valley is within the borough of Saddleworth in the north west corner of the Peak district. The valley was created by glacial movement during the last ice age. It is of course a very scenic place at any time but Robert was inspired by the particular beauty of the winter sunshine and snow.

Alexandra Park Oldham was constructed as a direct result of the cotton famine created by the American Civil War in the late 19th Century. The lack of cotton imported resulted in many having no work, so were put to work creating the park. We are still enjoying that legacy today.
